Caltech Resnick Sustainability Center

The Caltech Resnick Sustainability Center in Pasadena, California showcases Enclos’ ability to deliver a custom facade that harmonizes architectural ambition with engineering precision.

One of the project’s most unique aspects is the cold-warped glass curtainwall. This custom facade system features cassette-style panels that twist and flow to match the building’s complex geometry, complemented by diagonal exterior fins that enhance performance and visual impact. Enclos resolved the challenge of managing this twisting design through intensive collaboration with sealant and glass vendors, minimizing component uniqueness and optimizing cost without compromising the architect’s vision.

The design-assist process was critical to the project’s success. Enclos worked closely with the design team from the outset, allowing for real-time problem-solving. This collaborative approach helped resolve the challenges posed by the building’s geometry, ensuring the facade was optimized for both performance and constructability. Visual and performance mockups were crucial in testing the facade’s functionality and aesthetic quality.

Because all components were unique, fabrication and assembly were equally complex. Custom parts were fabricated with different miters and then dry-fit before final installation to guarantee the correct geometry.

Onsite, the cold-warped cassette system was installed in phases, starting with the smaller south elevation before moving to the larger west and north elevations. Vertical rafters, stretching the height of the building, were installed first to provide the geometry for the facade. Once in place, the glass units were hung on the rafters and cold-formed on-site to achieve the distinctive flow and twist of the facade. The exterior fins were installed after the facade units were caulked on all four sides, completing the installation.

For the west and north elevations, the installation had to account for the large timber beams, a key feature of the open atrium. Installing over 100 unique anchors on these beams required careful coordination and a custom installation strategy. Despite these challenges, Enclos’ team executed the installation with precision, using tower cranes and boom lifts to ensure each element was installed safely and efficiently. The Resnick Sustainability Center exemplifies Enclos’ expertise in delivering complex, high-performance facades. Through innovative design, collaboration, and precise execution, Enclos created a facade that meets rigorous aesthetic and performance standards and serves as a sustainable solution for the building’s future.
