Moscone Expansion

Enclos revisited the Moscone Convention Center in the heart of downtown San Francisco to complete an elaborate expansion. Before construction began, the convention center was operating at capacity, but demand for more real estate required the city and San Francisco Tourism Improvement District Management Corporation to seek development alternatives to keep up with competing markets.

Designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM), the expansion features 500,000 square feet of additional convention space and was split into three phases. Enclos worked alongside general contractor Webcor Builders on the addition of a new lobby, bridge, skyline, and parapet.

Enclos provided design-assist services for the storefront and curtainwall systems. The custom storefront system features a mullion-less design with a glaze of heavy-plate tempered ultra-clear glazing in 15´ tall lites and interior formed aluminum column covers. The custom curtainwall system is a pre-glazed and unitized silicone-glazed system with vertical and horizontal supporting steel elements. It includes insulated ultra-clear vision and pattern-fritted vision glass. LEED recycled steel material required a special mill and was procured overseas.

With the initial phase completed in 2018, Moscone Center will continue to serve San Francisco as one of its main drivers for business. The convention center achieved LEED Platinum certification, becoming the only major convention center to create less carbon emissions per visitor in North America and will generate clean energy with the largest rooftop solar installation in San Francisco.
